Swansea is a town located on the shore of Great Oyster Bay, a broad and sheltered bay on the east coast of Tasmania. In the 1820's the first permanent white settlers were granted land in the area. They named the district Great Swanport after the many swans seen in the region. Settlers came by boat as no roads reached the area until twenty years later. This diagram shows an impressive 613 feet long (187 meter) pier constructed at Swansea during the mid 1800's. The pier has since been replaced with a shorter structure and modern boat ramp.
