How do I load a digital TASMAP into my mobile device?
To utilise a GeoPDF or GeoTIFF on a smartphone or tablet there are many applications on the market that will enable this. One option is by using the after-market Avenza Maps app which is a free download from the App Store or Google Play.
Once you have an app installed on your device it is easy to transfer TASMAP products to your device either through Dropbox or any file manager program.
Once you have maps loaded they will appear in the maps list in the app on your device along with the distance the area on the map is from where you are actually standing (if location is enabled on your phone). You simply click on the map you want to view and it appears on the screen. You will see it shows the co-ordinates of the spot you are looking at and if you are actually standing in the map coverage you can hit the button (Either resembles a crosshair or an arrow, depending on version) and it will locate you on the map. You can also add waypoints, geotagged photos and record GPS tracks as you move around.
How do I use a digital TASMAP within Google Earth?
The KMZ files can be dropped straight into Google Earth by simply double clicking the file once downloaded. The map will automatically locate itself and you can zoom, rotate, change your point of view and add transparency.

What is a map datum?
A map datum defines a mathematical surface and the origin point for the coordinate system that is used to depict the location objects on the surface of the Earth.
TASMAP products are based on one of three different horizontal datums, depending on the date of publication. All new maps published after 1 March 2020 are based on the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020). Maps published between 1 March 2020 and 31 March 2003 are based on the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94). All maps published prior to that date, are based on the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66).
To keep up with modern technology and the increasing demands for accuracy of today's society, Australia has modernised its Datum to GDA 2020. To learn more about GDA2020 go to the Datum Modernisation webpage.
How do I know which datum a map is based on?
All TASMAP products state the datum in the border information.
What is GDA2020 and how will it affect me?
To keep up with modern technology and the increasing demands for accuracy of today's society, Australia has modernised its Datum. To learn more about GDA2020 go to the Datum Modernisation webpage.
What datum should I input into my GPS unit?
Refer to horizontal datum indicated within the map legend. Depending on the map this should be either the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66), the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94) or the Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020). Note in some GPS systems GDA94 or GDA 2020 is not an option, in this case use the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). You will also need to set the position format to either UTM (Standard Map Grid) or Latitude/Longitude (Degrees, Minutes and Seconds). Note on some GPS units Latitude/Longitude may be shown as ddd°mm'sss" (or something similar).
How do I convert coordinates from one datum to another?
Comprehensive explanatory information about GDA94 and the new GDA2020 and ATRF2014, including how to move between them, is available from the Australian Geospatial Reference System pages whilst a general overview of maps, mapping and datums and reference frames is available from the ICSM fundamentals of mapping section.
Will the change to GDA2020 affect contours and heights?
No. The datum used for heights has not changed. It remains the Australian Height Datum (Tasmania) which is based on mean sea level.
