In April 1854 Richard Cleburne bought the Ferry House at Risdon and took over the government's trans Derwent River ferry service in 1860. A lavish formal opening was held to celebrate the event. This plan shows the jetties owned by Cleburne and others owned by Mrs Herbertson. Warps used in pulling the hand operated ferries across the river are clearly marked on this plan.
