Italian born Angelo Giulio Diego Bernacchi (1853-1925), entrepreneur moved to the convict settlement of Darlington, Maria Island in 1884 with a grand scheme to establish vines and orchards. In 1886 the first grapes were picked from 50,000 vines planted. Sir Matthew Davis visited the island and was so impressed be became Bernacchi’s partner and the Maria Island Co. The company established a township with interests in wine-making, fruit growing, farming, cement, limestone and marble mining. By 1888 Darlington, renamed San Diago, had become a boom town of about 250 people. The location of land leased by the Maria Island Co. is clearly shown on this chart.
